You have been working outside and you can’t wait to come into your cool air-conditioned home. But wait …. It’s warm inside, too! You check the vents and for some reason, your air conditioner is blowing warm air. This is a common problem, and you are not alone!
You know there is a problem when your air conditioner is not cooling your house. You might need to contact an HVAC technician, but there are some things you can troubleshoot yourself.
If Your Air Conditioner is Blowing Warm Air You Can …
#1: Check the Thermostat. This may seem silly, but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to check. Maybe someone else in the house adjusted the thermostat while you were out. Also, if your thermostat says “on”, that means the fan will keep pushing air through even when the unit isn’t cooling the air. In the hot summer, the thermostat needs to be set to “cool” or “auto”.
#2: Check for a Loss of Power. If you have an older home and electrical system, you risk blowing a fuse on a hot day. Your air conditioner will struggle to meet your cooling needs and if the circuit becomes overloaded, it is disabled.
#3: Make Sure the Outdoor Unit Isn’t Crowded. Your air conditioner’s outdoor unit releases heat and needs room to ventilate. Make sure it has room! Cut back shrubs and weeds.
#4: Check the Air Filter. How long has it been since you changed the air filter? Clogged air filters are the number one reason for HVAC failure! You should change your filter when it’s dirty. That is different for every household depending on how many people live in the home, if you have pets, or allergies.
#5: Call Your HVAC Technician. If the first steps do not solve your problem, or if you don’t have time to check them, call your HVAC technician. There could be a refrigerant leak, a failing condenser fan, or maybe your air conditioner needs a new compressor.
